The most prominent of the lakes is Naini Lake ringed by hills and named after the Goddess Naini.
The first recorded discovery goes back to the year 1841 when Mr. P. Barron of Shahajahanpur was so moved by the scenic splendour of the place that he had a house constructed by the name "Pilgrim Cottage and gradually a township sprung up around the lake.
